GTech Canada ULC, a unit of Italian GTech SpA, has been selected to provide its Intelligen video lottery terminal information system to Greek lottery operator OPAP SA. GTech is a commercial lottery operator and provider of technology in regulated gaming markets.
GTech is expected to connect its system to OPAP and concessionaire VLTs beginning in late 2014, following system certification by the Hellenic Gaming Commission, the company said in a statement on Thursday.
GTech said it was chosen from among four vendors in an open procurement process to provide the system “to monitor and control up to 35,000 VLTs in OPAP’s planned new network”.
The Greek government last year sold it controlling stake in OPAP to a group of investors for EUR712 million (US$959 million). OPAP, which is listed on the Athens stock exchange, has a monopoly until 2020 of sports betting in Greece.
OPAP in March this year had selected GTech to provide support to its online sports betting operations in Greece.
GTech announced earlier this month that it entered into a definitive merger agreement with U.S.-based gaming supplier International Game Technology (IGT). GTech will acquire IGT for US$6.4 billion, comprised of US$4.7 billion in cash and stock, and the assumption of US$1.7 billion in net debt.
