The Macau government is increasingly dependent on gaming tax revenue. Direct taxes from gaming brought in 84.8 percent of the government’s total revenue for the first four months of 2014.
The importance of gaming taxes for the Macau government has been increasing as the city’s casino industry booms.
Data from the Macau Financial Services Bureau show revenue from direct taxes on gaming amounted to MOP48.4 billion (US$6.1 billion) for the first four months of this year, up by 19.2 percent from a year before.
Total government revenue for the period was MOP57.1 billion.
Direct taxes from gaming accounted for 83.2 percent of the Macau government’s total revenue in the first four months of 2013. The ratio for the full year stood at 81.5 percent.
