There were 25,213 dealers employed in the Macau casino industry at the end of the second quarter 2019, up 4.8 percent from the prior-year period, according to the latest survey on manpower needs and wages of the gaming industry, released by the city’s Statistics and Census Service on Thursday.
The increase in Macau dealer numbers also coincided with a rise in the aggregate of licensed gaming tables in the market. According to Macau’s gaming regulator, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, there was a total of 6,734 gaming tables in Macau in the three months to June 30, compared with 6,588 tables in the second quarter 2018.
Only Macau ID holders can be Macau casino dealers, under a Macau government policy. The city’s unemployment rate for April to June stood at only 1.7 percent according to official data released last month.
Meanwhile, the June average salary for a Macau casino dealer increased by 2.0 percent in year-on-year terms, to MOP20,850 (US$2,581).
In the second quarter of 2019, Macau’s gaming industry had a total of 57,840 full-time employees, an increase of 2.8 percent year-on-year. The figure excluded people working for VIP gambling junket promoters and junket associates.
In June, average earnings – excluding bonuses – of full-time employees in the gaming sector were MOP24,550, 3.8 percent higher than a year ago.
In the April to June period, a total of 1,942 new employees was hired by the gaming industry, up 48.1 percent from the second quarter of 2018. The employee recruitment rate and the job vacancy rate during the reporting period rose year-on-year by 1.1 percentage points and 0.1 percentage points respectively. “These indicators reflect an increase in demand for manpower in the gaming sector,” said the statistics service in its Thursday announcement.
Macau casino industry job vacancies tallied 904 in the second quarter, 81 higher than that in the same period last year. Among the vacancies, 588 were for casino dealers, according to the official data.
