The total spending – excluding gaming expenses – of visitors to Macau reached MOP13.75 billion (US$1.71 billion) in the second quarter of 2017, up by 17.5 percent compared to the prior-year period, according to data released on Friday by the city’s Statistics and Census Service.
The total non-gaming spending of same-day visitors to Macau saw a year-on-year decline of 1.5 percent to MOP2.37 billion in the second quarter. But the fall was more than offset by the increase in the total non-gaming spending of overnight visitors, which surged by 22.5 percent in the second quarter in year-on-year terms, to MOP11.38 billion.
Per capita non-gaming spending in the second quarter was MOP1,787, up 11.7 percent year-on-year and 4.6 percent judged quarter-on-quarter.
Travellers to Macau from mainland China remained the highest-spending visitors in the second quarter of 2017. Official data showed that the aggregate spending of all visitors from mainland China grew by 22.1 percent compared to the prior-year period. It totalled MOP10.84 billion in the second quarter, representing 78.9 percent of the total spending by all visitors to the city. Judged year-on-year, per capita spending of mainland Chinese visitors increased by 16.8 percent, to MOP2,162.
The largest single sector attracting Macau visitor non-gaming spend in the second quarter was shopping. It accounted for 43.0 percent of the per capita spending of visitors, according to the data released on Friday.
