The timetable for opening a casino resort in South Korea involving United States-based tribal casino operator Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment has again been changed. The scheme (pictured in an artist’s rendering) is now to open only in 2022. That is according to one of the parties involved in the project, Incheon International Airport Corp (IIAC).
“Once the Inspire Resort opens at Incheon airport in 2022, it will not only offer world-class facilities for domestic and international travelers but also provide high-quality jobs in the region,” said IIAC chief executive Koo Bon-hwan in comments carried out on Tuesday by the Korea Herald.
The media outlet added that construction will be “completed by end-2021″, and the property will “open for business in June the following year”.
The US$1.6-billion first phase of Mohegan Sun’s casino resort project in Incheon, near South Korea’s capital Seoul, was previously set to open in the final quarter of 2021. A total capital commitment of US$5 billion has been mentioned for multiple phases over two decades.
The U.S. casino firm – also commonly known as Mohegan Sun – had previously stated it expected to open the first phase of the scheme by 2020. It then changed that schedule to “late 2020 or early 2021”, before revising it again.
According to previous reports, IIAC, the operator of the air hub next door to the project, is also involved in the scheme.
