Three men have been arrested in Macau for stealing HK$15 million (US$1.93 million) from a deposit box at a VIP casino club, local media reported. The men – a Macau resident and two mainlanders – are suspected of forging documents and impersonating a high-value gambler.
The suspects reportedly used a fake ID of the victim to report the loss of the phone to a telecom operator, gaining access to the phone number that was registered at a Cotai casino VIP club, a police spokesperson told a news conference over the weekend.
One of the suspects then went to the club and said the victim had authorised them to withdraw the money from the deposit box, an order that was confirmed through the registered phone number.
Police are still investigating how the suspects had access to the victim’s personal data, public broadcaster TDM reported. The suspects were arrested when they were trying to pull off the same scheme at a VIP casino club on the Macau peninsula.
