The Gongbei border checkpoint – connecting the Chinese-mainland city of Zhuhai to Macau – is to undergo a CNY500 million (US$69.1 million) renovation. The facility links to Macau’s Border Gate checkpoint and is currently the most used border crossing between the two sides.
The upgrade will include improvements to the checkpoint’s surroundings and is scheduled to take two years to complete, according to media reports.
The facelift is part of a wider revitalisation initiative in Zhuhai’s Xiangzhou district, which borders Macau.
The upgrade to the Gongbei checkpoint (pictured in a file photo) will include enhancements to transport facilities serving the checkpoint, and a revamp to a nearby underground shopping centre.
According to official figures, an average of 310,000 people cross the Gongbei checkpoint daily, with total crossings reaching 113 million in 2024.
Mainland China remains the primary source of tourists to Macau and visitors to the city’s casinos.
