Resorts World Kijal, a subsidiary of casino operator Genting Malaysia Bhd, has partnered with Malaysia’s Department of Fisheries – Terengganu Office, to promote an ongoing turtle conservation project at Kijal Beach, in the state of Terengganu, Malaysia.

The company’s input is part of “Genting Bersama Malaysia”, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by Genting Malaysia, according to an August 28 press release.

The conservation programme aims to “protect endangered sea turtles and promote sustainable eco-practices along Malaysia’s east coast,” said the update. It focuses on “environmental education, youth engagement, and hands-on conservation action”.

Late August saw a symbolic release into the wild of 100 baby turtles by volunteers representing Genting Green Generation (G3). The latter is described as “an employee-driven initiative that champions environmental sustainability and community engagement under Genting Malaysia”.

The turtle release coincided with educational sessions conducted by the Department of Fisheries – Terengganu Office and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia.

The conservation effort also featured a beach cleaning session and the planting of 30 coconut seedlings.

Genting Malaysia runs Malaysia’s only casino complex Resorts World Genting, as well as casinos in the United Kingdom, Egypt and the Bahamas.

Spencer Lee, executive vice president of sales, marketing and public relations, described the company’s contribution since 2023 to turtle-protection work, as a “meaningful collaboration” with the Department of Fisheries.

“At Genting Malaysia, we believe that the responsibility to protect our environment is not just an individual effort, but a shared commitment,” he stated.

Mr Lee added: “That’s why we’ve actively engaged our G3 members in this initiative, to raise awareness, foster a sense of stewardship, and spark a ripple effect that reaches far beyond our organisation.”

The announcement cited Norlizawati binti Ibrahim, head of the conservation and fisheries protection division, at the Department of Fisheries – Terengganu, as saying: “The initiative carried out together with Resorts World Kijal is part of the ongoing efforts … to preserve Malaysia’s increasingly endangered turtle species.”

She added: “Through this initiative, we can raise public awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species and the need to safeguard the environment.”

The update said Resorts World Kijal “is committed to positioning conservation as an integral part of the tourism experience”.

“The initiative reflects Resorts World Kijal’s long-term CSR direction under the Genting Malaysia master brand, to align hospitality with sustainability,” it added.
