Tourist arrivals to Macau reached 724,800 over Christmas period

Macau welcomed 724,800 visitors during a six-day period encompassing the Christmas season and other public holidays, from December 20 to December 25, according to preliminary figures from the city’s Public Security Police.

The data indicate that the average daily number of visitor arrivals during the period was approximately 120,800.

December 20 is a public holiday in Macau marking the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region.

The highest daily total during the Christmas period was recorded on December 20, when arrivals reached 149,484.

Christmas is not a public holiday in Macau’s main tourist feeder market, mainland China, but it is an official holiday period in Hong Kong, the second most important source of visitors to the city. December 26 is also a public holiday in Hong Kong.

The police did not supply a breakdown of visitors by place of origin during the six-day period. However, the majority of tourists entered Macau via either the Border Gate checkpoint, linking the city with mainland China, or the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge.

In the corresponding period last year, from December 20 to December 25, Macau welcomed 625,154 visitors. During that time, China’s President Xi Jinping was in Macau from December 18 to December 20 to attend events marking the 25th anniversary of the city’s handover from Portuguese administration to China.

Macau recorded approximately 36.5 million visitors in the first 11 months of 2025, according to remarks made earlier this month by the director of the Macao Government Tourism Office, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes.

The total number of visitor arrivals between January and November has already exceeded last year’s full-year figure of 34.9 million, official data show.
