The Macau government has extended for a further year the tenure of Paulo Martins Chan (pictured in a file photo) as head of the city’s gaming regulator.

According to an announcement published on Wednesday in Macau’s Official Gazette, Mr Chan has been appointed for an additional 12-month term as director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, a body also known as DICJ. His new term starts on December 1.

Mr Chan, a former assistant public prosecutor-general in Macau, was sworn in on December 2015 as director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, initially for a one-year term. He has been reappointed for successive terms since.

Mr Chan succeeded Manuel Joaquim das Neves, who retired after almost two decades as director of the bureau.

Mr Chan’s spell as head of the Macau regulator has coincided with efforts to revamp the regulatory framework for the city’s gaming industry, particularly regulations on junket operators. The regulator has said the aim of such efforts was to strengthen oversight of the overall industry.
