Resorts World Las Vegas, a casino complex with more than 3,500 hotel rooms, located in Las Vegas, Nevada, said it has laid off nearly 50 employees as part of “efficiency” efforts. That is according to a statement reported by local media outlets.
The complex is run by Resorts World Las Vegas LLC, a unit of Malaysia’s conglomerate Genting Bhd.
“We appreciate the contributions all affected team members have made. This decision is part of our ongoing efforts to optimise efficiency and maximise the exceptional experience we seek to deliver to our guests,” the complex stated.
Executives of Resorts World Las Vegas and its parent company were scheduled to appear before the Nevada Gaming Commission on Thursday morning in Las Vegas to answer to a disciplinary complaint filed in August last year by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
Last week, the group said it had entered a deal with the regulators where the Genting side would pay a fine of US$10.5 million to the U.S. state of Nevada’s General Fund.
It is part of a proposed settlement with regulators regarding allegedly “unsuitable methods of operation primarily resulting from activities at the licensed property by illegal bookmakers Mathew Bowyer and Damien LeForbes”.
If the settlement is approved on Thursday by the Nevada Gaming Commission, it would be the second-highest fine ever levied by Nevada regulators, according to media reports.
The stipulation for settlement noted that the respondents “did not admit or deny the allegations,” and that “considering the costs and uncertainty of proceeding to a hearing,” had agreed to the settlement.
In addition to the fine, Resorts World Las Vegas will be required to provide regular reporting of anti-money-laundering activities to the Nevada Gaming Control Board and provide updated anti-money-laundering training to the resort’s compliance committee.
In December, Resorts World Las Vegas LLC announced the establishment of a board of directors, appointing industry veteran Jim Murren as chair. The firm also named Alex Dixon as chief executive.
