Hong Kong’s Tony Yat Wai Cheng won the top prize of HKD2,525,000 (US$325,000) at the 2015 Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Macau Main Event on Sunday.
Mr Yat was champion in a field of 493 players in the latest tournament on APPT’s season nine, held at PokerStars LIVE Macau at the City of Dreams. The full-time poker room – carrying the name of the leading brand of online poker that organises APPT – is located at Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd’s flagship Cotai casino resort City of Dreams.
On May 27, PokerStars announced that Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is to be an ambassador for the brand.
One of APPT’s rivals in the poker tournament business – the Asian Poker Tour (APT) – is to return to Macau with an APT Macau tournament to be held from July 21 to 29, “subject to regulatory approval”, according to a press release issued in late May. It will be held at a dedicated poker room at Sands China Ltd’s Venetian Macao. The room – promoted by Kings Consulting Ltd, a unit of Macau junket operator Suncity Group Ltd, and branded as Poker King Club – officially opened on May 22.
