Credit and market research provider CreditSights Inc says it expects the Macau casino sector to be able to achieve the MOP228-billion (US$28.46-billion) gross gaming revenue (GGR) target set by the city’s government for full-year 2025.
“We see Macau in a decent position to achieve its 2025 GGR target, with only a monthly average GGR of MOP15.6 billion needed – versus a year-to-date monthly average of MOP20.1 billion – for the fourth quarter,” wrote analysts Nicholas Chen and David Bussey.
They added: “Should the current pace of monthly GGR churn be sustained, it would also put the government’s previous GGR target of MOP240 billion within reach.”
In June, the Macau government reduced its 2025 GGR forecast by around 5 percent, to MOP228 billion, from a previous projection of MOP240 billion.
Discussing October’s performance to date, CreditSights – a unit of Fitch Group – said Macau had seen “robust” visitor numbers during the recent eight-day October Golden Week period, despite disruptions to the city’s transportation system and non-gaming services at casino resorts caused by the passage of Typhoon Matmo.
Preliminary figures disclosed by the local authorities show that Macau received just over 1.14 million visitors during the eight days of the 2025 holiday period. The daily average of visitors topped 143,000 during the October Golden Week, up by 1.9 percent from the comparable period a year earlier, and representing a 2.8-percent increase from 2019.
October Golden Week is a major festive break for mainland Chinese consumers and a peak trading period for Macau’s casinos. Mainland China remains the principal feeder market for the city’s tourism sector.
Casino GGR in Macau in September rose 6.0 percent year-on-year to about MOP18.29 billion, according to data released earlier this month by the city’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.
However, casino GGR in September fell by 17.5 percent month-on-month, as August – at MOP22.16 billion – marked the best monthly performance since January 2020, just before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In late September, the city’s casinos had to suspend operations temporarily for 33 hours due to the passage of Super Typhoon Ragasa.
September’s official GGR tally took the sector’s aggregate so far this year to approximately MOP181.34 billion, a 7.1-percent increase from the same period last year, according to government data.
