Macau’s Judiciary Police arrested three suspects for allegedly exchanging counterfeit gaming chips for a total of MOP90,000 (US$11,273). The police said it believes that two of the suspects are members of a cross-border counterfeit syndicate active in Macau since 2011, according to public broadcaster TDM.
In a press conference on Monday, the police said the gaming chips, which had a face value of HK$10,000 (US$1,290), were convincing enough to pass screening at the counter, but were detected by devices in the casino’s counting room.
One of the suspects was arrested after fleeing the cashier counter. Security officers at the casino caught the second suspect while he was exchanging the chips at the counter. The police did not name the casino.
Authorities also arrested a taxi driver involved in the scam, who was supposed to drive the other two suspects to the border crossing with mainland China.
