Visitor arrivals to Singapore in May rose 1.1 percent year-on-year to 1.22 million, the Singapore Tourism Board said on Thursday. It was the first monthly increase since February 2014, according to data on Singapore Tourism Board’s website.
Visitors from mainland China rose 47.1 percent year-on-year in May, to 141,236, while those from Indonesia declined 10.9 percent year-on-year to 238,511.
Judged sequentially however, the number of mainland Chinese visitors to Singapore fell 8.2 percent from April, when 153,783 arrivals were recorded from that country.
Singapore’s casino market is likely to contract by 4 percent in 2015, said a report by Morgan Stanley Asia Ltd issued on July 7, citing reduced casino visits by mainland Chinese tourists as one factor.
It was announced on June 30 that Singapore Tourism Board is to work with Singapore Changi Airport – the main civilian air hub for the city-state – and the state air carrier Singapore Airlines Ltd, to invest SGD20 million (US$14.6 million) over two years to encourage more leisure, business and meetings and conventions visitors to come to Singapore.
