South Korea’s Kangwon Land Inc, operator of a resort with the country’s only casino that allows betting by locals, says it will begin in April a two-year, KRW200-billion (US$135.4-million) programme of hotel- and condominium-room renovation involving 757 units at the complex (pictured).

The work will cover circa 41 percent of Kangwon Land resort’s current 1,827 guest-accommodation units.

According to a company statement on Monday, the upgrades are due to be completed in time for the inauguration of a second casino venue at Kangwon Land in the first half, 2028.

The revamp work involves 477 rooms at the Grand Hotel Main Tower, due to be finalised by April 2028; and 280 rooms at the Mountain Condominium, scheduled to be ready by October 2027. The 24th-storey top floor of the Grand Hotel Main Tower will house a new lounge reserved for casino membership customers.

All of the guest units to be undergoing revamp, date from when Kangwon Land’s main casino venue opened in 2003. Kangwon Land currently possesses 924 hotel rooms and 903 condominium rooms, a total of 1,827 guest units.

Online reservations for accommodation at the facilities due to be renovated, have been suspended since March 1, according to the company’s website.

A Kangwon Land Inc representative said in response to a GGRAsia telephone enquiry that the accommodation-investment budget had already been approved by its board.

The renovation work forms part of the company’s “K-HIT 1.0″ project, a multi-year development plan with a completion target of 2035 and a total budget of KRW3.00 trillion targeted at renovating the Kangwon Land resort, affirmed the announcement of the room rejig.

Kangwon Land is located in the country’s east-highlands region, approximately 150 kilometres (93 miles) from the capital Seoul.

Kangwon Land Inc recorded revenue of nearly KRW1.48 trillion for 2025, up 3.5 percent year on year, though its net income fell 31 percent, according to a January filing to the Korea Exchange.
