Studio City launches own skateboarding park with displays, contests

The Studio City casino resort in Macau’s Cotai district has opened a new non-gaming venue, a facility for skateboarders. The launch on Saturday of Studio City Sk8te Park (pictured) was marked that day and on Sunday by an inaugural Studio City SK8TEFest.

There was also what Studio City said was the first international skateboarding competition in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, called “Melco Style Presents: 2025 FISE Battle of the Champions”. The latter was at the Studio City Event Center within the property.

Studio City Sk8te Park is located outdoors in the shadow of the resort’s figure-of-eight Ferris wheel known as the Golden Reel. The Sk8te Park features an ‘8’-shaped dual bowl setup, said to offer Macau’s biggest skateboarding bowl.

The overall Studio City property is majority-owned by Macau casino concessionaire Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd.

Kevin Benning, senior vice president and property general manager of Studio City, was cited as saying in a company press release: “Melco [Resorts] has been committed to supporting the Macau Special Administrative Region’s government’s development strategy of economic diversification and promoting the cross-border integration of ‘Tourism+’.”

The latter was a reference to a Macau-government policy initiative whereby different elements – such as sports – are tied to the city’s offer to the tourism market.

Mr Benning stated: “The launch of the Studio City Sk8te Park reflects our dedication to this vision.”

He added, referring to a number of other local government aims: “By bringing world-class sports facilities and major international sporting events to Macau, we aim to strengthen the city as a ‘City of Sports’ and further reinforce Macau’s positioning as a ‘world centre of tourism and leisure’ while offering both locals and tourists more diverse entertainment experiences.”

Saturday’s event featured a performance by Japanese professional skateboarder Kai Kishi, and hosted Jasper Dohrs as well as local athlete Nathaniel Wong.

There were also BMX bike displays and DJ shows, graffiti “workshops”, breakdancing performances, and a “Skate Clinic”.

The 2025 FISE Battle of the Champions, Macau, presented by Melco Style, was described as “bringing together elite skateboarders from around the world”.

In 2023 as part of Studio City’s Phase 2, Melco Resorts had launched an indoor water park at the property, to complement its outdoor water park.
