Xi Jinping urges Myanmar to step up fight against online gambling and telecom fraud

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on Myanmar to continue to combat criminal activities, including online gambling and telecom fraud. He made the remarks during talks in Beijing on Tuesday with Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing (pictured, right), who was on a state visit to China.

China regards relations with Myanmar as a priority in its neighbourhood diplomacy, President Xi (pictured, left) told his counterpart, according to Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

China and Myanmar are good neighbours and good partners, he said per the report, stressing the importance of closer collaboration amid a changing and turbulent international landscape.

In his reply, the Myanmar leader said his country would work with China to resolutely crack down on online gambling and telecom fraud while protecting border security, Xinhua reported.

China has regularly reiterated its long-standing policy towards overseas gambling activities, stating that cross-border gambling can expose participants to financial losses and other risks, including fraud, money laundering, kidnapping, human trafficking and smuggling. Amendments have been made to mainland China’s legislation to criminalise the organisation of cross-border gambling activities.

The Chinese authorities have also been stepping up efforts to combat online gambling and scam operations across Asia targeting Chinese consumers. China has expanded international cooperation against such activities in recent years, particularly to curb online gambling, telecommunications fraud and related illicit activities.
