The Philippine casino regulator, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (Pagcor), inaugurated on March 21 a Pagcor-funded socio-civic centre in Laguna town. The new facility, Pagcor’s 49th socio-civic centre, “is expected to benefit more than 2,000 residents,” said the agency in a Tuesday press release.
The PHP50-million (US$867,700) facility was built in the San Isidro district in the municipality of Luisiana, in Laguna province.
“The two-story structure will function as a community hub and an evacuation centre during emergencies,” stated Pagcor.
The facility features bathrooms, a multipurpose open area, dining halls, a kitchen, a first-aid room, storage space and a room where babies can be breastfed.
The announcement cited Luisiana mayor Jomapher Uy Alvarez as saying the socio-civic centre would help the town’s development.
“We are sincerely grateful for the timely completion of this socio-civic centre which will be highly beneficial to our town,” said the mayor.
He added: “Our municipal hall has aged significantly, and with its planned reconstruction in 2025, this socio civic facility will serve as a crucial extension for local government operations.”
Pagcor’s assistant vice president for community relations and services, Eric Balcos, urged the residents to take responsibility for maintaining the building to ensure its long-term use.
