Macau casino concessionaire MGM China Holdings Ltd held a “MGM World Book Day” event, featuring a reading session and a workshop on traditional Chinese culture. The occasion, themed “Inheriting Chinese Culture, Building the Future through Reading”, was supported by Macau’s Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and the Macau Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM), according to a written announcement.
The event was at MGM China’s MGM Cotai property. FAOM’s president, Ho Sut Heng, said in comments during the gathering that reading was a “pathway to broadening… horizons”, and “essential in enhancing holistic and practical skills”.
She was also cited as saying her organisation would continue to collaborate with MGM China and all sectors of society to foster what she termed an ideal reading environment
The press release quoted Wendy Yu, executive vice president of human resources at MGM China, as saying: “Reading is the cornerstone of lifelong learning and a medium for the transmission of culture.”
She added: “Through collaboration with the government, associations, and higher education institutions, MGM has long been committed to expanding learning resources for its team members, in a bid to encourage them to broaden their knowledge and enhance competitiveness.
Since 2018, the casino firm has been partnering with Macao Public Library to organise roadshows to promote reading. With support from the IC and FAOM, MGM China hosted its first World Book Day-themed event last year.
The casino firm also said it established a “Golden Lion Reading Corner” back-of-house within its operation, “making it convenient for team members to borrow books”.
