City of Dreams Sri Lanka opens, eyes customers in India

Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, chairman and chief executive of global casino operator Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd, said in a Saturday statement that his company was “honoured” to have linked to its local partner, John Keells Group Plc, to create City of Dreams Sri Lanka.

The comment, via a press release said the resort in the capital, Colombo – described as “Sri Lanka’s largest investment and South Asia’s first integrated resort” – had as of that date “opened its doors”.

Mr Ho (pictured, left) was cited stating: “We are honoured to partner with John Keells Group on this visionary project.

“City of Dreams Sri Lanka reflects a remarkable collaboration, combining Melco’s expertise with the warmth and culture of Sri Lanka.”

Mr Ho added, referring to a 113-room Melco Resorts-branded hotel that opened at the weekend along with the casino: “Through our role in operating NÜWA and the entertainment and gaming offerings, we are proud to contribute to a destination that celebrates Sri Lanka’s unique identity while setting new standards for luxury and hospitality in South Asia.”

The update did not mention the number of tables, slots and other electronic games that were installed in the casino at City of Dreams Sri Lanka.

Krishan Balendra (pictured, right), chairperson of John Keells, was quoted in the update as saying: “This is a defining moment for Sri Lanka.”

He added: “City of Dreams is the largest private investment in our country’s history – an ambitious national vision brought to life. It is a world-class destination designed to catalyse economic growth, elevate our global profile, and help shape a modern, forward-looking Sri Lanka that inspires generations to come.”

Speaking in a press briefing on Saturday, Mr Ho said that Sri Lanka could be to India what Macau is to China in terms of a gaming market.

“Macau is by far the biggest gaming market in the world. Colombo is the closest destination to India, and an integrated resort like this gives the city a lot of potential,” he stated, as cited by a number of local media outlets.

In other comments cited recently, Mr Balendra suggested City of Dreams Sri Lanka could benefit from the rise of inbound tourism from the country’s main tourism feeder market, India.

A 687-room hotel branded Cinnamon Life has been open at the complex since last autumn.

The property also said in the statement that it features: “17 signature restaurants and bars… by globally acclaimed chefs, introducing innovative menus inspired by Sri Lanka’s vibrant culinary heritage”;  and a “luxury retail promenade featuring designer brands alongside artisanal Sri Lankan boutiques”.

The property also offers event and MICE [meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions] facilities, residential areas and office space.
