Macau casino concessionaire Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd says nearly 100 of its employees went out to assist the local community in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Ragasa.
The city’s weather forecaster raised the highest tropical storm warning – Signal No.10 – in the early hours of September 24 as Super Typhoon Ragasa was at its closest to Macau.
The city has five levels of tropical storm warning. They range from 1 (the lowest and least intense) through to 3, 8, 9 and 10 (the highest and most dangerous).
The Macau authorities downgraded the maximum storm signal to Signal No.8 at 4pm on September 24, and lowered it to Signal No.3 at 11pm.
The typhoon brought hurricane-force winds and significant flooding to low-lying areas across Macau.
On September 25, Melco Resorts’ volunteers, together with the company’s community partners, “dedicated their time and efforts to help communities and small businesses across various locations in Macau,” said the company in a press release.
The initiative aimed to help “bring back a safe and clean environment for those affected by the typhoon,” stated the casino firm.

The company’s volunteer teams were deployed to various locations across the city. In the southern district, 30 Melco Resorts volunteers collaborated with the Macao Federation of Trade Unions to help “return displaced items, removing garbage and debris, and restore safe and clean environments in the area”.
At Praia do Manduco, in partnership with the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, the volunteers “distributed meal boxes to the local community members … who were affected by power outages caused by flooding”.
The firm’s volunteers also helped with post-typhoon clean-up assistance in various areas of Coloane.
The announcement cited Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, Melco Resorts’ chairman and chief executive, as saying: “We are deeply thankful to our volunteers for their dedication and compassion in helping to resettle the community in the aftermath of the typhoon.”
He added: “At Melco, we are committed to supporting and reaching out to those in need – whether through our valued community partners or directly when required. We will continue to stand by Macau’s community whenever and wherever help is needed.”
