The Macau government collected just over MOP70.41 billion (US$8.78 billion) in fiscal revenue from gaming in the first nine months of 2025, up 6.0 percent from a year earlier, according to the latest data released by the city’s Financial Services Bureau on Friday.
In August alone, the government received almost MOP8.53 billion in gaming tax, the official data showed.
Under Macau’s 10-year gaming concession system that started on January 1, 2023, the effective tax on casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) is 40 percent.
The tax-take figures for a given calendar period and the city’s casino GGR during the same time frame are not directly comparable for several reasons. These include the fact that there is typically a delay between the point at which GGR is recorded by Macau’s casino operators and the point at which the government registers the corresponding tax payment.
Earlier this year, the Macau government reduced its 2025 GGR forecast by around 5 percent, to MOP228 billion from a previous projection of MOP240 billion.
The government now expects nearly MOP88.56 billion in revenue from gaming taxes this year.
The latest data from the Financial Services Bureau show that gaming taxes accounted for approximately 85.2 percent of the Macau government’s MOP82.63 billion in current revenue recorded in the year to September 30.
Casino GGR in Macau in September rose 6.0 percent year-on-year to about MOP18.29 billion, according to data released earlier this month by the city’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.
Casino GGR in September fell by 17.5 percent month-on-month, as August – at MOP22.16 billion and the month upon which the September gaming tax was calculated – marked the best monthly performance since January 2020, just before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In late September, the city’s casinos had to suspend operations temporarily for 33 hours due to the passage of Super Typhoon Ragasa.
September’s official GGR tally took the sector’s aggregate so far this year to approximately MOP181.34 billion, a 7.1 percent increase from the same period last year, according to government data.
