Macau recorded 368,538 visitor arrivals during the two-day New Year holiday period, encompassing Wednesday (December 31) and Thursday (January 1).

Preliminary figures from the city’s Public Security Police indicate that visitor arrivals for the two-day period were up 63.7 percent year on year.

January 1 was a public holiday in Macau and also in Hong Kong. On the Chinese mainland, the period from January 1 to 3 is a public holiday.

The Chinese mainland and Hong Kong are the two main feeder markets for Macau’s tourism and gaming industries.

The Macau police did not provide a breakdown of the city’s visitors by place of origin during the period. However, the majority of tourists entered Macau either via the Border Gate checkpoint or via the Hengqin checkpoint, facilities that link Macau to the Chinese mainland.

Macau is poised to have set a new record for annual visitor arrivals in 2025, as year-to-date numbers had already reached 39.411 million as of 11am on December 27, according to preliminary figures from the city’s Public Security Police.

The tally from January 1 to December 27 had already surpassed the 39.406 million visitor arrivals recorded in full-year 2019, the reporting period immediately preceding the Covid-19 pandemic and the previous record.
