Sands China Ltd held recently a “EmpowHER Sharing Session” (pictured top) for its female staff at The Venetian Macao’s Adelson Advanced Education Center.

The event “spotlighted women’s achievements and encouraged participants to embrace their strengths and unlock their potential,” said an announcement from the Macau casino company.

It also marked a celebration of the recent International Women’s Day.

EmpowHER is described as a “team-member resource group” within the casino business, and a “global, women-led diversity and inclusion initiative that aims to connect female team members to create opportunities for networking and development on a voluntary basis”.

Sands China’s parent, Las Vegas Sands Corp, also controls the Marina Bay Sands casino resort in Singapore. According to corporate announcements, the EmpowHER initiative is also active there.

Guest speakers at the recent Macau sharing session (pictured below) were: Macau Special Olympics gold medallist Fong Wai Chon; former Macau Special Olympics “international global messenger (2015-2019)”, Selina Ao Ieong; and Devonne Iao, Sands China’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer of resort marketing.

Sands China senior management also marked International Women’s Day by presenting to female staff members an individual floral item, as a gesture of appreciation for their work. The floral items had been purchased from Macau Special Olympics, a non-profit organisation established in 1987 that provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual challenges.

Sands China also said that EmpowHER hosted a “Love • Understanding • Together • Family Workplace Experience Day,” inviting staff members’ children to visit their parents’ workplace and create floral gifts together as an expression of gratitude to parents.

Grant Chum, chief executive and an executive director of Sands China, was quoted saying in a press release: “International Women’s Day is a special occasion to celebrate the strength and achievements of women, and we take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude to every female employee.”

The company describes itself as “Macau’s largest private employer,” with more than 28,000 staff – half of them women.

Mr Chum observed that Sands China was dedicated to ensuring it had a workplace where “all women can thrive and reach their full potential in a safe and respectful environment”.
