Wynn Resorts resumes construction at Wynn Al Marjan site in UAE after ‘short pause’

Casino operator Wynn Resorts Ltd says it has resumed, after a “short pause”, construction at its Wynn Al Marjan Island project (pictured in a file photo), in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The casino firm noted some halt to work had occurred at the site in Ras Al Khaimah, part of the UAE. The news comes amid a regional conflict that started in late February, involving the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other.

In a Wednesday filing in the United States, Wynn Resorts’ update didn’t mention the precise length of the work pause, or when it occurred.

“The company continues to be in regular communication with the governments of the United States and Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, so that we can make informed decisions,” Wynn Resorts stated.

“The company believes the broad defence posture of the UAE has worked extremely well, and we have confidence in the UAE’s ability to keep its population safe,” it added.

Wynn Resorts, parent of Macau casino concessionaire Wynn Macau Ltd, said that “broad segments” of the local population and businesses in the UAE continue to “follow normal patterns”.

“Our project construction has resumed following a short pause. Steps have been taken to ensure the safety and security of all employees working on site,” the company said.

The firm stated that its Wynn design and development team overseeing the project, and the resort executive team leading operational strategy and planning, had been “able to continue their work in a consistent manner” since February-end.

“Wynn employees have been offered the opportunity to work from abroad, if their home embassy recommends they do so,” Wynn Resorts affirmed, reiterating what the company had told GGRAsia last week.

“We will continue to closely monitor the situation; any additional impacts on the project will be assessed in due course,” the firm added in its latest update.

The US$5.1-billion property – in which Wynn Resorts has a 40-percent equity stake – is due to have a spring 2027 opening. As of last month, fitting out work for the interior had been under way.

Al Jazeera reported on Wednesday that a projectile had struck a container vessel, setting it on fire, in the Strait of Hormuz, approximately 25 nautical miles (46 kilometres) northwest of Ras Al Khaimah emirate.
