Macau’s gaming sector employs roughly double the number of people working for the city’s public administration, official data show.
In the second quarter of 2015, the gaming sector in Macau had a total of 58,123 workers – of which 57,422 were full-time employees – according to a quarterly survey by the city’s Statistics and Census Service.
In comparison, by the end of September, there were a total of 29,367 public servants, show figures from the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau.
There are almost as many card dealers in Macau as public workers. The city’s casinos employed on aggregate close to 25,100 card dealers in the second quarter of 2015.
Gaming is Macau’s largest direct employer and largest single contributor to the local economy measured by revenue. The industry is also indirectly responsible for thousands of jobs in Macau’s retail, hospitality and food and beverage industries, other government data show.
Macau’s total employed population stood at 394,500 in the three months to October 31. The unemployment rate stood at 1.9 percent, considered full employment by international standards.
