The tally of visitor arrivals to Macau in March increased by 4.2 percent year-on-year to nearly 2.37 million, show data released on Friday by the city’s Statistics and Census Service.
The number of overnight visitors in March rose by 14.1 percent to approximately 1.17 million, but the total of same-day visitors that month dropped by 3.9 percent, to approximately 1.19 million.
The average length of stay of visitors in March increased by 0.3 of a day judged year-on-year, to 1.2 days, said the statistics bureau.
For the whole of the first quarter, total visitor arrivals rose marginally by 0.6 percent year-on-year, to nearly 7.46 million.
The number of visitors to Macau in March from mainland China increased by 1.8 percent year-on-year to approximately 1.48 million, or 62.7 percent of all visitors that month.
The total of mainland residents travelling to the city in March under China’s Individual Visit Scheme dropped by 6.1 percent year-on-year, to 625,993, or 42 percent of all tourists from the mainland.
The March tallies of visitors from Hong Kong and Taiwan registered respective 10.5 percent and 6.5 percent increases from the prior-year period, at 563,408 and 78,458.
The numbers of those arriving in March from South Korea (41,675) and from Japan (27,814) saw respective year-on-year declines of 4.4 percent and 2.3 percent.
The aggregates of long-haul visitors from, respectively, the United States (16,019), Australia (8,185), Canada (7,196) and the United Kingdom (5,482) all recorded increases year-on-year in March.
For the whole of the first quarter, the tally of overnight visitors to Macau rose by 9.0 percent to approximately 3.51 million, while same-day visitor numbers dropped by 5.8 percent to nearly 3.95 million
The first-quarter total of visitors from mainland China (4.94 million) decreased by 1.7 percent year-on-year, whereas those from South Korea (173,921), Hong Kong (nearly 1.56 million) and Taiwan (250,874) increased by 3.1 percent, 3.6 percent and 11.6 percent respectively.
Moreover, in the first three months of the year, the tallies respectively of long-haul visitors to Macau from the U.S., Australia, Canada and the U.K. registered year-on-year increase.
