The number of visitor arrivals to Macau fell 2.8 percent in May, judged year-on-year. Measured month-on-month, the May tally was up slightly, by 0.3 percent, showed data released on Thursday by the city’s Statistics and Census Service.
There was a total of nearly 2.48 million visitors in May.
The number of same-day visitors to the city dropped by 8.3 percent year-on-year to 1.27 million, whereas that for overnight visitors rose by 3.8 percent to nearly 1.21 million.
In the first five months of 2016, visitor arrivals totalled nearly 12.41 million, down marginally by 0.8 percent year-on-year.
In May, the average length of stay of visitors increased by 0.1 of a day judged year-on-year, to 1.2 days. The average stay of same-day visitors and overnight visitors was 0.2 of a day and 2.2 days respectively.
The tally of visitors from mainland China decreased by 3.5 percent year-on-year to 1.63 million in May; among which those travelling under China’s Individual Visit Scheme dropped by 4.6 percent to 718,680. Overnight visitors from the mainland (780,408) increased by 4.7 percent.
Mainland visitors in May came mainly from Guangdong province (727,443), Hunan province (70,514) and Fujian province (64,950).
The tally of visitors from South Korea (48,109) and Hong Kong (500,973) decreased by 8.0 percent and 4.1 percent respectively year-on-year, while those from Taiwan (81,404) increased by 6.5 percent.
The total of long-haul visitors from the United States (15,519) and the United Kingdom (5,000) decreased year-on-year in May; however, those from Australia (7,971) and Canada (6,498) increased.
In the first five months of 2016, the number of same-day visitors dropped by 7.2 percent to nearly 6.47 million while overnight visitors rose by 7.2 percent to nearly 5.94 million.
In the calendar year to May 31, the tally of visitors from mainland China (8.22 million) and Hong Kong (2.55 million) decreased by 1.5 percent and 3.2 percent year-on-year, whereas those from South Korea (265,691) and Taiwan (424,419) increased by 1.3 percent and 10.2 percent respectively.
The number of long-haul visitors from the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom registered year-on-year increases of 2.5 percent, 2.1 percent, 6.1 percent and 2.8 percent respectively.
