Mainland China’s total October sales from official lottery products increased by 11.3 percent year-on-year to approximately CNY37.65 billion (US$5.68 billion), according to official data from the country’s Ministry of Finance. The monthly figures show that the growth recorded last month was supported by an increase in sales of sports lottery tickets.

Sports lottery sales in October jumped 17.1 percent year-on-year to CNY19.34 billion, while welfare lottery sales increased by 5.8 percent to CNY18.31 billion, the ministry said.

In October, sales were up in 29 of the 31 provinces and cities of mainland China authorised to sell lottery tickets. Total lottery sales in Guangdong province – mainland China’s biggest single-province market for lottery products – grew by 9.6 percent year-on-year to CNY3.70 billion.

Combined sales for the two lottery systems during the first 10 months of this year amounted to CNY348.43 billion, a year-on-year increase of 7.7 percent. Welfare lottery sales increased by 4.9 percent year-on-year to reach about CNY176.92 billion, while sales of sports lottery products rose by 10.7 percent to CNY171.51 billion.

Guangdong remained mainland China’s biggest single-province market for lottery products in the 10 months to October 31. Total lottery ticket sales in the province reached CNY34.34 billion in the period, up by 6.0 percent from a year earlier.
