Jocs SA pips Genting to Andorra casino licence: reports

Jocs SA has been officially announced as the winner of a licence to develop a casino project in the European micro-state of Andorra, pipping the Malaysian casino group Genting to the role, according to media reports. Andorra is on the mountainous border between Spain and France.

Genting – which was among the bidders – was disqualified due to issues related with a reported inability to prove it had secured land to develop its EUR140-million (162.8-million) project for a 20-storey building. The company can still challenge the decision.

The announcement was made by the local regulator, Consell Regulador Andorrà del Joc, Spanish broadcaster Cadena Ser reported on Wednesday.

Jocs SA, a company based in Andorra, has a technology partnership with Austria-based gaming equipment maker Novomatic AG for the project, according to Cadena Ser. It proposed a EUR15-million project with a total of six storeys, two of which would be underground.

The Genting group operates casinos in several parts of Asia, including Malaysia, Singapore and in the Philippines – the latter via a joint venture. The group also has a presence in the United States, the Bahamas, Egypt and the United Kingdom. It is also involved in casino cruise operations.
