The Poker King Club announced on Tuesday that it was cancelling the upcoming Poker King Cup Macau 2019, an event that had been scheduled to take place from March 15 to 21 at the club’s Venetian Macao casino resort poker room.

The poker club promoter said in a press release it had decided “not to move forward” with the Macau tournament “due to current unforeseen circumstances”. The brand did not provide a specific reason for the cancellation.

“This decision was made with utmost regret for the position we leave our players, [people] who have given this event an astounding amount of support, [for] which Poker King Club is deeply grateful,” said the poker promoter.

“We hope we can move forward from this and continue to provide you with the best poker service in the future,” it added.

The Poker King Cup Macau was first held in 2017. This year’s series had been due to feature 14 events including a HKD200,000 (US$25,479) buy-in super high roller event and a HKD16,500 main event.

The Poker King Club said it would offer players who had made flight and hotel reservations to take part in the event – and involving any payments made between January 11 and March 5 – partial refunds of airline ticket costs and hotel fees.

According to its corporate website, the Poker King Club brand currently has three poker rooms under its name: Poker King Club Macau at the Venetian Macao; Poker King Club Manila at the Solaire Resort and Casino Manila, in the Philippines; and Poker King Club Korea at Maison Glad Hotel Jeju, on Jeju island in South Korea.

The first Poker King room opened at Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd’s StarWorld Hotel in 2009 and was named after a Hong Kong film of the same name starring Louis Koo and Sean Lau Ching Wan.
