Macau had nine hotel complexes with 1,000 or more rooms each, as of December 31; one more than in the previous year, show data from the city’s Statistics and Census Service. All were associated with casino resorts.
These nine large-scale hotel facilities employed almost 26,800 people in aggregate, the bureau added.
The HKD27-billion (US$3.4-billion) MGM Cotai, the second casino resort developed by Macau-based MGM China Holdings Ltd, opened to the public in February last year. The resort, MGM China’s biggest investment in Macau to date, features 1,390 rooms and suites, according to company information.
Macau had about 38,000 hotel rooms at the end of 2018, show data included in the Statistics and Census Service’s annual Hotels and Similar Establishments Survey. Around two thirds of Macau’s hotel room inventory were located in five-star hotels.
A number of Macau casino operators has said they need more hotel rooms to meet existing customer demand. During a conference call with investment analysts in August, Wynn Macau Ltd’s chief executive Matt Maddox stated it was “clear” that the company required more rooms at Wynn Palace casino resort on Cotai. He added at the time: “Our hotel is full. On the weekends, we’re turning away customers that we do not want to be turning away.”
All casino operators in Macau have announced plans to increase and/or revamp existing room supply. The majority of the new supply will be located in Cotai, where the city’s six casino operators have all been developing new large-scale casino resorts featuring hotels with hundreds – or thousands – of rooms each.
