The PokerStars brand of online poker games and land-based poker tournaments is to hold its first-ever event in Taipei, Taiwan, in early 2020.
“APPT Open Taipei will be co-organised with the Chinese Texas Hold’em Poker Association (CTP Club) and will be held at the association’s CTP Club in Taipei from January 31 to February 9, 2020,” said the event promoter in a written announcement on Tuesday.
“This is the first PokerStars Live Asia event ever to be held in Taiwan,” said PokerStars.
The 10-day event will feature 33 live poker tournaments, including: the CTP Club Kickoff; the APPT Open High Roller; the APPT Open Main Event; and the APPT Open Super High Roller. The APPT Open Main Event has a guaranteed prize pool of TWD7.5 million (US$ 245,766).
The CTP Club was launched in 2015 and has several poker clubs in Taiwan, the biggest one located in Taipei, according to a media report. Under the existing legal framework, only tournament poker is offered in Taiwan, with cash games being illegal.
Considered a game of skill and not chance, organisers of poker tournaments in Taiwan are still allowed to distribute cash prizes.
