Philippine-listed and licensed online gaming operator DigiPlus Interactive Corp said on Wednesday it had “formally filed” three online-related licence applications with the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (WCGRB) in South Africa.
“This move advances DigiPlus’ entry into one of the most promising regulated online gaming markets globally,” it said in a press release.
The firm had announced in July that it aimed to expand into South Africa. At the time, the company stated that it was preparing to file three licence applications with the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, the regional regulator for the country’s Western Cape province.
DigiPlus said it would be applying for a national manufacturer’s licence, a bookmaker’s licence, and a bookmaker’s premises licence, as confirmed in its Wednesday release.
“The WCGRB is regarded as the preferred jurisdiction for international operators like DigiPlus due to its transparent regulatory processes and digital readiness,” the firm stated.
DigiPlus’ chairman, Eusebio Tanco, said in prepared remarks included in the release: “The filing of our online gaming licence [application] in South Africa marks another milestone in DigiPlus’ global growth journey, as we bring our proven track record of innovation, responsible gaming, and player protection, together with our strength in localising games for diverse markets, to one of Africa’s most dynamic economies.”
On Monday, DigiPlus launched its first international brand, GamePlus, in Brazil, the firm noted.
It added that venturing into the Brazilian and South African markets contributed to the company’s aim of “becoming a leading digital entertainment provider for the world’s most dynamic emerging markets”.
DigiPlus is a Philippine holding company with investments in gaming and leisure businesses, including bingo services and a digital sportsbook platform.
In the Philippines, the brand runs BingoPlus, described as the country’s first government-approved online bingo platform. It also operates ArenaPlus, a sportsbook, and GameZone, a platform for casual and arcade gaming.
On Friday, DigiPlus said in a letter to the Philippine Stock Exchange that the firm also “continues to evaluate potential acquisitions”, with “no definitive agreements or plans” finalised at present. The communication followed an article in the news outlet Bilyonaryo titled: From bingo to online gaming to casino? DigiPlus eyes buyout of billionaire Lawrence Ho’s stake in City of Dreams Manila.
