A licensing entity linked to Macau casino resort operator Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd has applied to the Macau government for several trademarks containing the words “Bangkok” or “Thailand”.

The trademarks’ associated services are listed respectively as accommodation, and food and drink, as well as meeting-related services. That is according to GGRAsia’s checks of the relevant application records.

The requests were filed by Galaxy Entertainment Licensing Ltd on February 10 to the Macau Economic and Technological Development Bureau.

The wording of the sought trademarks featured: “Galaxy Thailand”; “Galaxy Thailand Integrated Resort”; “Galaxy Bangkok”; “Galaxy Bangkok Integrated Resort”; “Galaxy Resort Thailand”; “Galaxy Resort Bangkok”; “Galaxy Hotel Thailand”; and “Galaxy Hotel Bangkok”.

Other trademarks applied for on February 10 by Galaxy Entertainment Licensing also include: “Galaxy Integrated Resort”, with a corresponding trademark text in Traditional Chinese characters; and “Galaxy International Integrated Resort”, also with corresponding Chinese. The licensing entity also applied for the trademark “Galaxy IR”.

The scope of services mentioned for those three trademarks cover: hospitality services; temporary accommodation services; food and drink services; and services for meetings.

Galaxy Entertainment operates the Galaxy Macau casino resort complex in Cotai, and StarWorld Hotel in the Macau peninsula. The Cotai complex currently has eight hotels: Galaxy Hotel; Banyan Tree Macau; Hotel Okura Macau; JW Marriott Hotel Macau; The Ritz-Carlton, Macau; Raffles at Galaxy Macau; Andaz Macau; and Broadway Macau.

Banking group JP Morgan mentioned in an October note – about the prospects of a Thai casino industry – six organisations that had expressed interest in Thailand, including Galaxy Entertainment.

Goldman Sachs said in a January note – citing conversations with Galaxy Entertainment management – that “strategic priorities” for the casino company, included to “explore [an] IR opportunity in Bangkok”.
