Members of the GGRAsia team have contributed to Macao Polytechnic University’s (MPU’s) “Gaming And Recreation Management Seminars”, an initiative for year-four bachelor-degree students majoring in Gaming and Recreation Management.

The audience included people already in professional roles at Macau integrated resorts (IRs).

The morning and evening lectures on October 10 at MPU’s Taipa campus looked at emerging IR markets in Asia, including Sri Lanka, and under-development ones such as Japan and the United Arab Emirates.

The two-and-a-half hour seminars – delivered by Michael Grimes (pictured), a principal at GGRAsia, with extensive research support from Stephanie Lai, GGRAsia senior editor – also looked at possible ways forward for Thailand, despite a casino-legalisation bill being withdrawn.

The two lectures additionally examined the role of the domestic online segment in the Philippines, and the progress of the Casino Filipino privatisation push by the regulator-cum-operator, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (Pagcor).

MPU students’ domestic market was covered via topics including the work of Macau IRs converting some standard room stock to a smaller number of either suites or villas; the role of shows and events to support gaming business; and the evolution of ‘smart tables’ and baccarat side bets.

GGRAsia was invited to give the lectures by Professor Wang Changbin, of the Centre for Gaming and Tourism Studies, and his colleague, Dr Ryan Ho Hong Wai.

They said in a statement: “Michael’s presentation has enhanced students’ understanding of management issues and encouraged them to reflect on the broader implications for industry development.

“We believe the lecture has successfully broadened participants’ perspectives and stimulated meaningful dialogue on the future direction of the gaming sector in Asia.”

According to MPU, its Gaming And Recreation Management Seminars aim to “enhance students’ understanding of related theories and management issues in order to develop practical skills at work”. Invitees include local or overseas experts or scholars.
