The Jeju government has told GGRAsia that no disciplinary action will be taken against the foreigner-only casino business at the Jeju Dream Tower resort (pictured in a file photo), regarding a manipulated 2021 social impact survey linked to the transfer of an existing gaming licence to that site.
But the government of the semi-autonomous South Korean island said when contacted by telephone, that it wanted to see improvements in the rules for any future surveys.
The reaction came after South Korea’s Supreme Court confirmed on Thursday a lower court’s reduction on the length of a prison penalty for a former Jeju casino executive guilty of manipulating the 2021 survey.
Kim Woong had initially in July last year been given 16 months in jail, with no probation period, by a first court process on Jeju. The survey had been submitted to the authorities there to support the transfer of an existing Jeju casino licence to Jeju Dream Tower resort, promoted by Lotte Tour Development Co Ltd.
But in a second judicial process, a court reduced Mr Kim’s jail sentence to 10 months, with 24 months of probation. That has now been confirmed by the highest court.
The information on the updated sentence came from South Korean news outlets, according to GGRAsia’s local correspondent.
