Malaysia-based security seal specialist Mega Fortris Bhd organised a beach clean-up this month at Tanjung Harapan, a tourist attraction in Selangor, Malaysia. The initiative was in collaboration with the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia, and Volunteers Unite.

“We saw the participation of 30 dedicated volunteers who were committed to making a positive environmental impact,” stated the firm in a press release.

Participants collected a total of 81.6 kilograms of rubbish, of which “4.6 kilograms – approximately 5.6 percent – was identified as recyclable materials,” stated the company.

It added: “A majority of the collected trash was unfortunately not recyclable, as a large portion included styrofoam plastics that had been discarded”.

The announcement cited Alfred Samuel Mariyaras, a representative of the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia, as saying: “Whenever we do things like this, we can only save 10 percent” of materials collected.

The update said Mr Mariyaras had given guidance to the clean-up team on the types of waste that are recyclable. That was in a bid to enhance the efficiency of future clean-ups, as well as to boost public awareness of the issue.

Mega Fortris started trading on the main market of Bursa Malaysia in November, after an initial public offering (IPO) that helped the company raise MYR99.07 million (US$25.5 million currently) for itself and an additional MYR99.07 million for selling shareholders.

Mega Fortris stated at the time that it would use about 45.0 percent of the IPO proceeds for a new business venture in Macau, where it will provide a complete service for the “supply and handling of playing cards in sealed security boxes”.
