Macau casino concessionaire MGM China Holdings Ltd says it has launched a recycling and upcycling programme for used playing cards, in collaboration with a local technology company, Fnetlink Technology Co Ltd.
In a Tuesday press release, MGM China said it became the first casino firm in Macau “to realise a fully localised, end-to-end recycling and upcycling system for used playing cards”.
MGM China and Fnetlink Technology started co-developing in 2023 an automated card-shredding system, whereby used playing cards are processed into shredded material and recycled into “high-quality” recycled fibres “without the use of water”, in a local factory (pictured below).
Those fibres can be used for making eco-friendly packaging materials, the casino operator said.
Upon full implementation, the programme is expected to recycle and upcycle approximately 3,000 tons of used playing cards annually, achieving a 100-percent recycling rate, the firm added.
A ceremony marking the launch of the programme was held on Tuesday, attended by Macau officials, and senior management members from both MGM China and Fnetlink Technology.

The update cited MGM China’s chief executive and executive director, Kenneth Feng Xiaofeng, as saying that MGM China “has always been committed to exploring more efficient and forward-looking sustainability solutions through innovative technology”.
The programme developed in collaboration with Fnetlink Technology, he stated reflects the casino firm’s “efforts to enhancing resource efficiency through technology,” and also “highlights MGM’s determination to collaborate with local tech enterprises in transforming research and development achievements into practical applications”.
“Through innovative initiatives such as this, we hope to inject more creativity and practical possibilities into the diversification of local industries,” Mr Feng added.
