Macau casino concessionaire MGM China Holdings Ltd says it has signed an agreement with Macau-based company Fnetlink Technology Co Ltd, to launch an “innovative recycling solution” turning used playing cards into “eco-friendly” packaging.
In a Friday announcement, MGM China said the partnership expected to recycle “approximately 3,000 tons of used playing cards annually, achieving a 100-percent recycling rate”.
“With this initiative, MGM becomes the first integrated resort in Macau to implement a fully localised recycling system for playing cards, demonstrating its strong commitment to environmental protection,” stated the casino firm.
The agreement was signed at MGM China’s booth at the 2025 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (2025 MIECF).
Keith Lei, senior vice president of human resources and sustainability at MGM China, said in prepared remarks: “This groundbreaking initiative gives new life to our used playing cards. It empowers the circular economy and supports Macau’s development into a low-carbon, diversified economy.”
He added: “Partnering with a local tech company highlights how innovation can play in driving green transformation. It sets a new standard for sustainable growth in the integrated resort industry.”
The announcement cited Elaine Wong, general manager of Fnetlink, as saying that her company was “proud to partner” with MGM China.
“Their [MGM’s] bold implementation of low-carbon environmental technologies offers feasible solutions for Macau’s economic diversification, while creating practical development opportunities and service platforms for the city,” added Ms Wong.
According to the press release, MGM China and Fnetlink started in 2023 co-developing a “smart, automated card-shredding solution which was designed to boost operational efficiency while reducing the risk of occupational injuries”.
The two companies further their collaboration this year by launching what the announcement said was “Macau’s first local programme that recycles the used playing cards into high-quality recycled fibres, without using water”.
“These fibres are then turned into eco-friendly packaging products. The new solution not only reduces the amount of solid waste significantly … but also eliminates carbon emissions associated to the need for cross-border transportation of shredded cards.”
MGM China also sponsored the “Green and Low-Carbon Transformation Cases and Experience Sharing in the Hospitality Industry” session, held on Thursday, at the 2025 MIECF.
