Mainland China-based Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality Ltd aims to open a ‘Mirage by MGM Shenzhen’ hotel in that mainland city next door to Hong Kong, for trial operations by the end of 2026.

The new 230-room hotel will be in Shenzhen’s beachside district, Xiaomeisha, according to a company posting on Chinese social media platform WeChat.

The project (pictured in an artist’s rendering), would be the first of two Mirage-branded hotels Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality plans for the mainland. The company had announced last year that it aimed to open a ‘Mirage by MGM Shanghai’ hotel in Shanghai in 2027.

Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality is a joint venture between China’s Diaoyutai State Guesthouse and United States-based gaming and hospitality group MGM Resorts International. The latter is the parent of Macau casino operator MGM China Holdings Ltd.

The Shenzhen project announcement followed a July 16 signing ceremony for management of the venue. It was attended by Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality senior executives; representatives of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Development Group Co Ltd; and of Shenzhen SDG Xiaomeisha Investment & Development Co Ltd, according to the WeChat post.

The latter firm is a subsidiary of state-owned conglomerate Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Development Group, and focuses on tourism and leisure projects in Shenzhen’s Xiaomeisha area. That is according to Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Development Group’s corporate materials.

Mirage by MGM Shenzhen is to feature about 230 luxury guest rooms. The property is situated next to the beachside hotel MGM Shenzhen, which was launched last year.

The introduction of the Mirage brand to Shenzhen marks a “monumental” step for Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, the company’s president Zhou Feng was cited in remarks in the social media post.

The Diaoyutai-MGM venture has been adding hotel capacity on the Chinese mainland in recent years, including in the cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai in Guangdong province, both close to Macau.

The most recent addition in Guangdong has been a new hotel brand, MGM RESERVE, in Zhuhai. The property opened in May, according to the company’s statements.

Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality currently promotes a number of other hotel and residence brands on the mainland: Diaoyutai Hotel; Bellagio by MGM; MGM; Mhub by MGM; and mx by MGM.
