Pagcor’s aid to storm-hit communities in the Philippines tops US$1.2mln

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (Pagcor), the nation’s casino regulator-cum-operator, says it has provided more than PHP67-million (US$1.2-million) worth of relief assistance to communities “severely affected by successive storms and widespread flooding” that struck Luzon, the country’s main island, in July.

“The ongoing relief missions have benefitted more than 74,000 families in Metro Manila and Luzon who received food and non-food packs containing essentials like rice, canned goods, noodles and coffee as well as hygiene kits and sleeping mats,” stated the agency in a press release.

The announcement cited Pagcor chairman and chief executive, Alejandro Tengco, as saying that in the last week of July alone, the agency distributed 41,000 relief packs worth PHP37 million.

“Today, even after the rains have stopped and the floodwaters have subsided, we continue to provide support to severely affected communities because we understand that recovery from the aftermath of disasters takes time,” the Pagcor chief said.

“Pagcor remains committed to support affected communities as they try to get back on their feet,” Mr Tengco added.
