SJM Resorts Ltd, the Macau operations unit of Hong Kong-listed casino firm SJM Holdings Ltd, has continued its support for a key Macau cultural event, “The Feast of the Drunken Dragon,” acting as “main sponsor” for this year’s festival.
A team of volunteers from SJM also helped distribute “longevity rice” during the event, according to a company press release.
SJM sought to “inject fresh vitality into traditional festivities while showcasing Macau’s cultural appeal to visitors from around the world,” stated the casino firm.
Organised by the Macao Fish Trade General Association, “The Feast of the Drunken Dragon” was held on May 5, a date observed as Buddha’s Birthday. A worship ceremony and a traditional drunken dragon lion dance were held on the morning at the city’s Senado Square.
The performance teams paraded through several districts of the Inner Harbour and Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, including Grand Lisboa Macau, Hotel Lisboa Macau, Kam Pek Market, Ponte 16 Resort Macau, and Hong Kung Temple.
In addition to sponsoring the event, SJM also dispatched a volunteer team to assist in distributing “longevity rice” at the Sam Kai Vui Kun and Iao Hon Market.
“The Feast of the Drunken Dragon” – described as a unique tradition – was listed in 2009 on the “Macau Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage”, and formally recognised as part of the “National Intangible Cultural Heritage List” in 2011.
SJM says it has “long been committed to the conservation and inheritance” of Macau’s intangible cultural heritage, supporting a “variety of traditional cultural activities”.
