Vietnam’s Sun Group has signed an agreement with Marriott International that would see the development of 10 new “hotels and resorts” in the country’s coastal destinations of Phu Quoc and Vung Tau, according to a recent announcement.
The partnership aims to deliver nearly 4,500 rooms across eight Marriott brands, with most properties set for Phu Quoc, Sun Group stated.
The portfolio is scheduled to open progressively between 2026 and 2030, helping to bolster Vietnam’s accommodation capacity ahead of major events including the Asia‑Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 2027, taking place in Phu Quoc.
Marriott’s brands slated for introduction under the deal include W Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Westin, Le Méridien and Courtyard by Marriott, alongside Fairfield, Moxy Hotels and Four Points by Sheraton.
Phu Quoc is an island off Vietnam’s south-west coast and forms part of Kien Giang province. It is home to the Corona Resort & Casino, one of two existing casino complexes in the country – alongside the Grand Ho Tram casino resort in Vung Tau – currently permitted to offer gambling to economically qualified local residents.
Sun Group is the promoter of a number of hotels and theme park facilities in Phu Quoc island, including the JW Marriott Phu Quoc – in a collaboration with Marriott – that opened in 2017.
Elsewhere in Vietnam, Sun Group is also the promoter of a new casino resort in the Van Don Economic Zone in Quang Ninh province. Construction work began last December.
The announcement cited Rajeev Menon, president of Marriott International for Asia Pacifc (excluding China), as saying that Vietnam “is emerging as one of the most dynamic tourism markets in the world”.
“The number of hotels managed by Marriott International in Vietnam has doubled since 2022. Partnering with Sun Group – one of the highly visionary destination developers, signing an additional 10 hotels this time – helps us continue to affirm our long-term commitment to this market,” he added.
Last week, Sun Group said it had signed a partnership agreement with Singapore-based Changi Airports International (CAI) for the latter to operate the Phu Quoc International Airport.
The partnership will see CAI support the expansion of international flight connectivity and the development of non-aeronautical revenue streams, including retail, food and beverage, and duty-free offerings, Sun Group noted at the time.
