Universal Ent expects 2025 loss amid VIP woes at Okada Manila, lower sales of amusement machines

Japan’s Universal Entertainment Corp, parent of the Okada Manila casino resort in the Philippine capital, says it now expects a JPY14-billion loss for the owners of the parent in financial year ending December 31.

It had expected a JPY800 million profit for the period. The revision issued on Thursday, also sees a JPY26-billion reduction in forecast net sales, down to JPY124 billion.

It said factors for the change included that: “For the integrated resort business, the Philippine casino market as a whole is experiencing a downturn in the VIP segment, intensified competition in the mass market, and a decline in tourist arrivals, leading to rapid market changes and a more challenging business environment than anticipated.”

Universal Entertainment also makes pachinko and other amusement machines mainly for the Japanese market.

It stated that for “titles scheduled to be launched in the fourth quarter, the launch schedule was altered due to factors such as the low passing rate in the type approval test. Hence, the sales volume for the current fiscal year fell short of the plan (130,000 units)”.

Last month Tiger Resort, Leisure and Entertainment Inc, the Universal Entertainment unit that controls Okada Manila, reported third-quarter results that saw casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) down 15.3 percent from the prior-year period.

The third-quarter result saw a 40.8 percent year-on-year fall in VIP revenue, to just under PHP1.46 billion (US$24.8 million).

On Thursday Universal Entertainment reported a net loss attributable to its owners amounting to just under JPY10.65 billion for the first nine months of 2025, an improvement on the JPY19.46-billion loss a year earlier. Group-wide net sales for the period were JPY92.57 billion, flat from a year ago.

The parent also gave some commentary on the September return to Okada Manila of Shirley Tam as executive vice president of casino marketing.

Universal Entertainment described her as “well-admired” in the industry. It added her arrival had “strengthened the casino marketing team”.

The parent also noted: “ Her team will implement more targeted and seasonal gaming promotions, aiming to stimulate demand aligned with our customer segment.”

It additonally stated regarding Okada Manila: “In the non-gaming business, some Pearl Wing guest rooms are currently undergoing renovation, and we look forward to offering them to our guests before the holiday season.”
