Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance has been instructed by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long, to look at ways of again allowing locals to gamble at casino premises on Phu Quoc island in An Giang province. That is according to VietNamNet Global, a government-controlled news outlet.

Phu Quoc’s rights under a nationally-mandated pilot scheme for locals’ gambling, lapsed at the end of 2024. Corona Resort & Casino in Phu Quoc has so far been the only gaming venue in the country where economically-qualified locals have been allowed to make wagers.

VietNamNet said the policy directive to look again at locals-gambling in relation to Phu Quoc, followed recent government discussions on the economic development agenda for the whole of An Giang province, as well as the country’s Mekong Delta region.

A local media report earier this month said the promoter of Corona Resort & Casino had issued VND2.4 trillion (US$91.8 million) in five-year bonds as part of a refinancing exercise.

The Phu Quoc casino resort is described as being promoted by Phu Quoc Tourism Development and Investment JSC.
