Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd, operator of the Altira and City of Dreams (pictured) casino resorts in Macau, is the latest gaming concessionaire in the city to grant a pay rise to its staff.
In a letter to employees signed by co-chairman and chief executive Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, the casino operator said it would give a 5-percent salary increase to eligible non-management staff.
The letter was published online by the labour activist group Forefront of the Macao Gaming.
The percentage rate mentioned in the memo is in line with awards previously announced by other Macau operators. The first monthly payment of Melco Crown’s increment is to be given in April. It did not specify how many workers were eligible for the salary increase.
GGRAsia approached Melco Crown requesting more information but received no reply by the time the story was published.
In the internal letter, the company said it “continues to have faith” that Macau will remain “the best destination” for its customers
“With the [Macau] government’s push toward non-gaming development, Melco Crown Entertainment is best positioned in its industry to provide the most differentiate products and offerings in the territory,” Mr Ho said in the letter.
Macau market rival Wynn Macau Ltd last week announced a 5-percent pay rise for most of its current 8,100 workforce. Fellow concessionaire SJM Holdings Ltd was the first company to announce a pay rise for its staff in 2015 at the beginning of January. Sands China Ltd and MGM China Holdings Ltd have also publicly announced salary increases this year.
The city’s six gaming concessionaires are all in the process of building new casino resorts on Cotai that will need thousands of extra workers for front of house and back of house roles.
