Digital tech a focus for MGS Entertainment Show 2017

A Chinese state-owned enterprise specialising in digital video surveillance technology is among the exhibitors at this year’s MGS Entertainment Show – an annual Macau-based event featuring a casino industry trade exhibition and conference, and previously known as the Macao Gaming Show (MGS).

According to the show organisers, “a number of leading technology companies have signed up to show off tech advances” at the event. MGS Entertainment Show is hosted by the Macau Gaming Equipment Manufacturers’ Association. This year’s event is to be held from November 14 to 16 at Cotai Expo at the Venetian Macao casino resort.

State-owned Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co Ltd – known as Hikvision – is based in Hangzhou in China’s Zhejiang province. It has grown to operate subsidiaries around the world, including in the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.

“With a presence on every populated continent, Hikvision is a leading international player affecting the public’s security and privacy. The ability of their surveillance technology to piece together a narrow set of relevant events from a vast supply of video footage has changed the way investigations and security monitoring are conducted,” said a press release released on Tuesday from the MGS Entertainment Show organisers.

Hangzhou-based Alibaba Cloud is also exhibiting at this year’s MGS Entertainment Show. The release from the organisers noted that the firm – said to be China’s largest provider of public cloud computing services, and part of the Alibaba Group led by Chinese businessman Jack Ma, also known by his Chinese name Ma Yun – had this summer made an agreement with the Macau government “to bring improvements to the territory’s infrastructure for tourism, healthcare, transportation and government”.

Tuesday’s release additionally said the deal with Mr Ma’s group would also “improve the professional training in information technology available to students in Macau so as to support the labour needs of Macau’s smart-city ambitions”. The term “smart city” has been used by the Macau government to flag its desire to develop Macau’s digital economy as part of local efforts to diversify beyond casino gambling.

MGS Entertainment Show will also feature some humanoid robots from Qihan Technology Co Ltd, a firm based in Shenzhen, Guangdong.

A conference panel during the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) Asia 2017 casino industry trade show held in Macau in May, discussed whether robots might appear soon on casino floors around the world.
