Hotel occupancy at Macau’s five-star hotels stood at 92.4 percent in the first half of this year, up slightly by 0.9 percent year-on-year, according to data published on Tuesday by the city’s Statistics and Census Service.
The city’s average hotel occupancy in the first six months of 2019 – including all hotel segments and guesthouses – was 91.1 percent, up by 1.1 percent from the comparable period last year. The average length of visitors’ stay in the period remained flat at 1.5 nights, showed the official data.
The number of overnight visitors staying in the city’s hotels and guesthouses totalled nearly 6.94 million in the six months to June 30, up by 1 percent when compared to the same period last year. The tally of these overnight visitors that stayed at the city’s five-star hotels reached nearly 3.87 million in the period, up slightly by 1.6 percent, according to the statistics bureau.
As at the end of June this year, there were 119 hotels and guesthouses – with a total of 38,700 rooms – operating in the city. Rooms in Macau’s five-star hotels totalled 24,500, accounting for about 63.3 percent of the city’s hotel room inventory.
There was no opening of large-scale casino resorts in the city during the first half of this year. But one of Macau’s gaming operators, MGM China Holdings Ltd, launched in March part of its new high-end accommodation known as Mansion villas at MGM Cotai.
In June alone, the average occupancy rate of Macau’s hotels and guesthouses stood at 89.5 percent, down 0.3 percent from the prior-year period. Average occupancy rate at the city’s five-star hotels fell slightly by 0.2 percent year-on-year to 90.7 percent.
Macau received nearly 20.3 million of visitors in the first half of this year, according to another set of data published last week by the census service. During the period, the city saw a much faster growth in the number of day-trippers compared to the number of overnight visitors.
The average room rate of the city’s hotels was MOP1,354.8 (US$168.6) in the first half of this year, up by 2.1 percent year-on-year, according to a separate source of information collated by the Macau Hotel Association. The average room rate of the five-star hotels was MOP1,647.4 in the period, up by 1.1 percent year-on-year.
